Research and Development
Since the company was established in 1992, Alexion has focused its
research and development programs on innovative treatments for serious and life-threatening
diseases of high unmet need. The company is a world leader both in complement-inhibition therapy and
monoclonal antibody development, with ongoing research and development
programs targeting hematologic, kidney and neurologic diseases, transplant rejection,
cancer and autoimmune disorders.
Alexion has proven its research and development capabilities through the successful
development and regulatory approval of Soliris® (eculizumab), a first-in-class
therapy for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), and the first terminal
complement inhibitor.
